Backyard

* * *

When humankind finally settled under a roof and had figured out how to bring things like light, air, and water inside, irony struck. Of course people began longing for gardens, open-air terraces, and other outdoor spaces attached to houses and buildings. Experiencing the connection between indoors and outdoors via tents, decks, gardens, and lawns became quite common, and once again the “extras” came into play, too. If you’re worrying about getting enough to eat, you grow cabbage, rather than orchids. If you’re worried about having enough water to drink, you haul buckets rather than putting in a pool. The modern backyard may be one of the least necessary but most happy parts of modern living.
